(promotion) Rebecca Spörl, who is a professional singer, church musician and organist loves metal music, especially Nightwish and HIM, since she was a child. That‘s why she thought: The best place to start a career as a singer in a metal band would be in Finland, in the land of Heavy Metal and the most metal bands per capita! She applied for a job offer of a Finnish metal band from Helsinki, searching for a female lead singer and got the job! Right now she and her band mates from Averlanche have published their debut album Life’s Phenomenon. In an inspiring interview lead singer Rebecca and keyboarder and songwriter Antti Kopra are speaking about their first album, about the song selection and what has inspired the band for their music.

Inspired by melodic metal of the 90s – Interview with Rebecca Spörl and Antti Kopra from Averlanche about their debut album “Life’s Phenomenon”

Collage Rebecca und Antti
(COLLAGE: Finntastic, PHOTOS: Rebecca Spörl) Rebecca Spörl and Antti Kopra from Averlanche are both really big fans of Finnish melodic metal of the 90s.

Finntastic:
Moikka Rebecca, nice to meet you again and nice to meet you too Antti! In our last interview, Rebecca, you have already told us about your crazy Finland story and your career as a lead singer in a Finnish metal band! How was the reaction of your friends and family, when you told them about your career plans?

Rebecca:
I think in the beginning nobody took me seriously. I’m known for my everchanging crazy ideas and I am constantly trying new things. However, when I visited Finland and actually started planning when and how I will move, my family and friends understood, that I am really serious about it. My parents have been very supportive from the very beginning, even though it wasn’t easy for them to say goodbye and to let their only child move alone to a different country. Many people said “she will be back in a year”, but that was six years ago, so I guess now everyone has accepted, that I will stay in Finland! *laughing* Of course, I still visit my family and friends every year back home in Germany and they come to visit me in Helsinki too.

Finntastic:
That’s nice to hear! Let’s speak a bit about your band and music! First, we like to know: What does your band name „Averlanche“ actually mean?

Rebecca:
There is no special meaning behind our band name “Averlanche”. Antti Kopra, our keyboarder didn’t know how to spell avalanche in English!*Antti Kopra joins laughing*

Finntastic:
Finnland has a lot of different rock and metal genres. You already told us, that your music could be characterized as melodic metal. How would you describe melodic metal in general? What characterizes this genre?

Antti:
Melodic metal is a very broad term, but usually it combines metal guitars, melodic singing and often keyboards.

(VIDEO: Averlanche) Circus is one of the songs of the debut album of Averlanche.

Finntastic:
How popular ist melodic metal in Finland at the moment and why did you select this genre for your music?

Rebecca:
We definitely did not pick the genre because of its popularity, since the times of melodic metal seem to be over. Just turn on the radio nowadays! We just happen to like the sound of the genre and decided that this is, what we want to do. Of course, our sound is mainly influenced by Antti, who is our main songwriter and who’s favorite bands are HIM, Nightwish and Stratovarius.

Finntastic:
How easy is it in such a competitive music market like Finland to find your own place as a band and to build up a fanbase? What‘s in your opinion the secret for success in the music business?

Antti:
This is hard to answer, since our band is pretty new. We just want to play the kind of music we like. If we were worried about success, we would make other kinds of music. *laughing*

Lifes Phenomenon
(COVER: Averlanche) The debut album “Life’s Phenomenon” consists of ten melodic metal songs and four bonus tracks.

Finntastic:
After „The Sounds of Insomnia“, „Circus“ and “Imagined Nothing” you now have released your debut album „Life’s Phenomenon“. How easy is it to release a debut album in the times of corona?

Rebecca:
Corona luckily didn’t interfere with the album at all, since it was recorded last year. However, touring will be an issue, because live-gigs are not safe at the moment. We hope this will change soon. We can’t wait to play live again and meet our fans in person!

Finntastic:
Did you release your debut album on your own or did you get support by a record label?

Rebecca:
No, we are not signed by any label yet. We did the album ourselves together with our producer Hiili Hiilesmaa and Jaakko Tarvainen.

Finntastic:
How was the feedback of the audience in reference to your already published Singles „The Sounds of Insomnia“, „Circus“ and “Imagined Nothing” so far?

Antti:
So far we have gotten good feedback and now we are waiting to hear what people think of our album “Life’s Phenomenon”!

Averlanche
(PHOTO: Averlanche) The band hopes, that they could soon start touring with their new album.

Finntastic:
What‘s the meaning behind „Life’s Phenomenon“ and how is the album title connected to the album cover?

Rebecca:
Antti Kopra tried to write a song called “Life’s Phenomenon”, but never finished it. Since the debut album consists of ten little stories about life, he felt like “Life’s Phenomenon” would be the perfect title for the album. And if you look closely at the album cover, you might be able to find out the connection to the cover yourself. *winking*

Finntastic:
Antti you wrote all the songs. What or who inspired you for the album and what kind of songs do we find on your debut album?

Antti:
I get inspired by the different styles of music I listen to, but my biggest influence has always been the Finnish band HIM. Every song on our album has its own sound. You will find besides melodic metal also influences from power metal, symphonic metal and even acoustic rock music.

Imagined Nothing Single
(PHOTO: Averlanche) Imagined Nothing is the third single and part of the debut album of Averlanche.

Finntastic:
What makes the sound of your debut album unique compared to other Finnish melodic metal bands?

Antti:
Our debut album soundwise is a trip back to the time when we started to listen to metal music. We basically went back to our roots and make the kind of music we used to listen to back in the days, in the 90s.

Finntastic:
Rebecca, you are not only a metal fan, but also a trained church musician.Has this influenced in some way your debut album? And how would you describe your way of singing?

Rebecca:
I haven’t written any songs on this album, so it didn’t influence the album that much. My singing style is mostly influenced by Amy Lee and Evanescence, because that is the music I taught myself to sing with, but I have sang so many different genres over time that it is really hard to say how my style has developed. I have sung everything from church music to musical, rock, R&B, jazz and pop, but my heart always belongs to metal music.

Finntastic:
Besides your debut album, you also released your first music video of the Song „Diamond Hills“. What is the song and the video about? Tell us a bit about the shooting.

Antti:
I think there is no need to reveal the meaning of the songs, since I want the listener to figure out the meaning for themselves. And the music video is pretty straight forward. It shows our band playing together, but with a little twist.

Rebecca:
We really hope, that it will be possible to go on tour next year with our new songs!

Finntastic:
Kiitos mukavasta haastattelusta! Thanks for the inspiring interview and good luck with your band!

Rebecca:
Thank you too, for interviewing us! All the best to you! ?

Antti: Yeah, thanks so much!

Life‘s Phenomenon – Das Debütalbum der finnischen Melodic Metalband Averlanche

Was charakterisiert das Musikgenre?

Antti:

*lacht*

Finntastic:
Nach „The Sounds of Insomnia“, „Circus“ und „Imagined Nothing“ habt ihr jetzt euer Debütalbum „Life‘s Phenomenon“ herausgebracht.

Finntastic:
Und wie ist das Feedback auf eure bereits veröffentlichten Singles „The Sounds of Insomnia“, „Circus“ und „Imagined Nothing“?

Antti:

Finntastic:
Was ist denn die Bedeutung hinter dem Albumtitel „Life‘s Phenomenon“ und in welcher Verbindung steht der Titel zum Albumcover?

Rebecca:

Was das Album außerdem einzigartig macht: Das Debütalbum besitzt vier Bonustracks und zwar eine deutsche Version der Songs „The Sounds of Insomnia“, „The Diamond Hills“, „Archiv of Love“ und „Ghost“.

HIM inspirierte Antti Kopra bei seinen Kompositionen.
Dann muss sich Amy Lee schon was Neues ausdenken.
