(Brand naming) Amazing, time moved so quickly!…Even though it feels, like it was yesterday…But to tell you the truth, there have been more than ten years now, between today and this special day, when I discovered my Finnish soul! But if the Finland virus just hits you, this beautiful land, with its dark green forests, turquoise blue lakes and relaxed people wouldn’t let you go anymore! In this blog article I will tell you, how I discovered my passion for Finland, the Finnish language and culture and how I came up with the idea of starting this blog. Actually, everything started with the Finnish metal band HIM and a side project of HIM frontman Ville Valo with the Finnish rock band Agents…

New album „Ville Valo & Agents“: A tribute to Rauli Badding Somerjoki

Janne-Oskari guitar
(PHOTO: Finntastic) Also Janne-Oskari likes the album „Ville Valo & Agents“. While listening to the music, he took out his guitar and started to jam on it!

This spring, former HIM frontman Ville Valo and the Finnish band “Agents” have just released their common album “Ville Valo & Agents”. The audio CD is above all a tribute to the Finnish rock musician Rauli Badding Somerjoki, who made music together with the Agents too, but who died a way to early in 1987.

Agent guitar player Esa Pulliainen came up with the idea for this album three years ago. “Upon finding three demo cassettes in my drawer, which had been sent to me by Badding back in the day, I knew I had to contact Ville right from the get-go […]”, he said in an interview with the music magazine Metal Hammer in 2017. Pulliainen has been totally lucky about the fact, that these songs have now become presence in public, after being lost for so many years. And for him it is also a pleasure, that Ville and the band Agents could honour Badding Somerjoki in that way.

Of course, I have just given the new album a listen and I must say: The album “Ville Valo & Agents” is a musical masterpiece! First, because it has been recorded by totally great musicians and second, because the sampler contains also several new recordings of to this date unreleased songs of Badding Somerjoki, for instance “Orpolapsi Kiurun” (Orphan Child of the Skylark).

CD Ville Valo & Agents

And with these songs of Badding Somerjoki, sung by Ville Valo, my Finland journey just has started about ten years ago! Actually, also the music of HIM played a leading role, because without the music of HIM, I would have never payed attention to the sideproject of Ville Valo with the Finnish band Agents…

Ville Valo’s voice and songs from Badding Somerjoki woke up my Finnish soul

I discovered the video of “Ikkunaprinsessa” and the two other videos of Ville Valo‘s sideproject with the band Agents at random in 2008, when I scanned the internet for HIM songs. And even two of these songs in a new version can be found also on the new album “Ville Valo & Agents”!

By listening to the second song “Ikkunaprinsessa” of the CD “Ville Valo & Agents”, I got goose bumps on my skin! Pictures of the video flashed my mind, showing 22-year-young Ville Valo standing in muted-blue light in front of a black lantern, singing this beautiful song of Rauli Badding Somerjoki! His beautiful maroon, curled hair is falling loose over his shoulders. Behind him you can see a snow-covered, Finnish winter landscape. Ville is smiling, while standing there with his eyes closed and singing into the microphone with his lovely, deep and soft voice: Naisiin ei voi pienen poikanen luottaa, ne suren ikävän pieneen sydämeen tuottaa…Ruudun taka, ruudun taka, ruudun taka tyttöni katso vain…”

The band Agents had performed the song at that time together with Ville Valo live at the Finnish TV-channel TV2 for the TV-show “Laulava Sydän”. Later on, a compilation of all the music of the show has been released too.

And so this beautiful Finnish song “Ikkunaprinsessa”, the song “Paratiisi” and the love song “Jykevää on Rakkaus” (all of them are originally from Badding Somerjoki) aroused my interests for the Finnish language and culture and finally woke up my Finnish soul! Moreover, this crucial experience was responsible for the idea of starting this Finland blog. I wanted to know more about this beautiful country, share experiences about Finland with other people, who are also addicted to that land of the thousand lakes and finally I wanted to meet Finnish people too!

And by the way: “Jykevää on Rakkaus” translated into English means something like “Love is strong”! What a nice coincidence, isn’t it? Because since then my love for Finland has been getting stronger and stronger. And today it is a significant part of me…

Back in time: Finnish metal music, HIM and a teen crush on Ville Valo

Finntastic HIM CD collection
(PHOTO: Finntastic) A picture of my HIM Collection…

So actually everything started with the passion for the music of the Finnish rock band HIM and my teen crush for the smart frontman Ville Valo! I guess most of you know the Finnish rock band HIM from Helsinki because of their famous song “Join me in Death”. It has been released on the album “Razorblade Romance” (2000) and has also been a part of the soundtrack of the movie “The 13th Floor”.

And it has been played on the radio in Germany over and over at that time and remained on the first rank of the charts for weeks! Also famous: the amazing songs “Funeral of hearts” (2003) or “Gone with the sin”, two of my favourite HIM songs! But there are still more great songs of HIM! Just check it out! Anyway, my teen crush on Ville Valo played a leading role on my music selection these days…Please forgive me, but I have just been a youngster totally in love with Ville Valo like thousand of other teenager too these days! *smiling*

And so I started to hang on to every article about the band, every video and every single interview of Ville Valo. My room’s walls were covered with several posters of Ville Valo and the guys from HIM, I got from the Bravo magazine and other German youth papers. Of course, I bought the debut album of HIM, the EP “Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666”, as well as the second album “Razorblade Romance”, which had been published at that time and actually later on all the other HIM albums, which  followed.

Today, I own all studio albums, CDs and DVD-special editions, all Greatest Hits albums and every bonus material. Among them also the amazing live album “Digital Versatile Doom”, which the band has recorded live in Los Angeles at the famous Orpheus Theater. And I own also a trendy, black HIM T-shirt with the HIM logo on it, the heartagram, which I bought at a live concert at the legendary and famous Tavastia Club in Helsinki as a souvenir in 2009.

Moreover, I love to remember HIM’s live gig at “Rock am Ring” in 2001″…Oh my god, this is evoking old memories!! So amazing, how Ville got on stage with this fucking awesome black jacket, showing the cheeky phrase “Your pretty face is going to hell” on the backside and started to sing the first part of the song “Please don’t let it go”, while his brown hair is fluttering light as a feather in the wind. The atmosphere has been amazing and I will never forget this awesome live concert, although I have just watched it live on TV-screen! By the way: A full version of the concert you can watch on Youtube! *hooray*

Three songs of Rauli Badding Somerjoki and a passion for Finland

As I mentioned before, I stumbled at random over these three videos of “Ikkunaprinsessa”, “Paratiisi” and “Jykevää on Rakkaus”, while channel-hoping across Youtube for HIM songs. And this time, Ville was singing for a chance not in English, but in Finnish!!! I was just thinking: “Wow, what extraordinary and amazing language! And I really wanted to learn it, also for the reason to understand the lyrics later on.”

And so Ville Valo and his side project with the Agents was the beginning of my Finland passion! But also Rauli Badding Somerjoki was a part of the story, because of his songs I got in touch with the Finnish language and culture.

First, I started learning Finnish in self-studies with the book “Yksi, kaksi, kolme”. Later, I attended the Finnish course of Stefan at the Göttingen adult education center, where we worked with the same book. Moreover, I attended two years during my studies also some Finnish courses for language students at the Finno-Ugric department of Göttingen University. At this point a big “Kiitos” to Tiina, our Finnish teacher for the great and funny Finnish lessons! I love thinking back to our lessons and the funny teaching tutorials of “Kuulosta Hyvältä”! Later, I continued to learn Finnish at Göttingen and Wiesbaden adult education center. Kiitos also to my lovely Finnish teachers Gudrun and Tuija for the great Finnish classes.

The more I dealt with the Finnish language and I learned about the foreign language structure, the more stronger became my connection with the land, its people and its culture. I started to soak in every text, film and every documentary about Finland. And finally I discovered that I had more in common with the Finnish mindset and culture, I have ever thought of, e.g. the love of nature, the twisted humor, the love for art and design, the Finnish sauna and summer cottage tradition and even the passion for heavy sounds, which means the Finnish metal and rock music…

A trip to Helsinki and an amazing concert at Tavastia Club

Helldone 2009 mit HIM
(PHOTO: Finntastic) I was lucky to get tickets for the Helldone Festival on December 28th 2009!

This was the reason why, my journey led me in December 2008 for the first time for some days to Helsinki. Because at this point of time, it was a tradition, that HIM was playing during the turn of the years and on New Year’s Eve some live gigs at the Helldone Festival at Tavastia Club. And I was lucky to get two tickets for the concert on December 2009, also this was not so easy at that time! If you didn’t log in into the ticket platform at the right time, you would have been remained empty-handed, because the tickets were sold out most of time during less than five minutes! Anyhow, the concert was amazing! The atmosphere was terrific and I got to know at the concert also many other nice HIM-fans from all over the world! And I attended some more HIM concerts too later on, like a really great one at Hamburg docks club in 2010.

By the way, because of my love for music and it has been just fun, I started at that time also a Youtube channel with the artist name “Stimmtalent” (English: voice talent), where I uploaded several HIM covers and also a cover duett of „Jykevää on Rakkaus“. If you like to listen to some of my old HIM cover versions, just check them out on my reactivated Stimmtalent Music Channel.

And by the way: When I had been in Helsinki, I didn’t dare to put my CD with my HIM cover songs in Ville’s post box in Munkkiniemi! ? Although I had been creeping around his extraordinary home, a neo-gothic tower, like every other crazy HIM-fan many times! Finally with intention to make a photo of me and the tower in the background and also with the hope, having the chance, crossing Ville Valo’s path by chance.

But later, when I got home from my first Finland trip, I published some links to my HIM cover versions at the Heartagram forum (I think, this HIM forum does no longer exist). And goodness knows, maybe Ville hat listened to one of my covers and maybe he liked them…*rofl* Well, as a young girl, your are just doing crazy things…

Finntastic guitar
(PHOTO: Finntastic) Music has ever been an important part of my life! So for me it will be totally fun to start taking guitar lessons again! And Janne-Oskari likes it too!

Unfortunately, Ville sold his tower some years ago. But the neo-gothic water tower must have been a perfect location for writing music! I can imagine, that Ville wrote several of the HIM songs in this special location, inspired by the beautiful landscape around, the historic aura and atmosphere, as well as by the history of the building. By the way, I discovered some nice article about the old Munkkiniemi water tower, showing also some indoor shots. And I must say: Ville has a really good taste, not only for music but also concerning interior design!

An internship in Helsinki and the Finnish way of life

When I started to learn Finnish, some of my friends thought, I have gone crazy! And many of them also thought, that my idea of going to Finland for a practical training would be a really stupid idea! But this didn’t prevent me from doing this, because it was my biggest dream during these days to be able to live for some time in Helsinki, getting to know the Finnish way of life. And actually also, to be able to crawl along the Munkkiniemi water tower again… *smiling*

And so my love for Finland leaded me 2011 after graduating from university to the land of the thousand lakes, to be more specific into the Finnish capital Helsinki, for an internship at the German-Finnish chamber of commerce!

Inken - Finntastic - 2011
(PHOTO: Finntastic) This pictures was taken on a sunny summer day at Suomenlinna, a lovely island just nearby the coast of Helsinki in 2011.

At that point, it has been clear for me: deep inside of me was not only hiding but also living a real Finnish soul! Since then, I have been in the land of the midnight sun for so many times. I have seen so many lovely parts of this beautiful Nordic country and I have met many nice Finns and also Finland lovers from all over the world.

And even though my passion for frontman Ville Valo has come to a normal level (Everyone is growing up sometime!), it has been a tragical moment for me, when I got the information, that HIM will end up his band career with the end of 2017! But nevertheless, to honour the HIM-era, I attended one of the HIM farewell-concerts in Cologne with Anja a good friend of mine. And I must say, Ville and the band did a great job this evening. The show was amazing, but we could also see, that also the guys were suffering from pain of separation. This fare-well concert and all the other live gigs of the band I will keep in mind and in good memories forever!

Also after the HIM-era: My love for Finland remained

And even though HIM ended his band career in 2017, my love for the country and culture has survived the time. Especially for me it has been so lovely, that I got in contact with so many nice people from Finland and with Finland passion, by running this Finntastic Finland blog. And it is also great, that I have found so many good friends on that way too! Moreover, I love to be member of the German-Finnish association “Deutsch-Finnische Gesellschaft” too!

To be honest, it would be impossible to honor everybody this way, that’s why I want to say “Kiitos paljon” to ALL of you, to all of my good Finland friends, blog readers and “Northern lights” out there!

Thanks for being there, this is amazing! And I am looking forward for the next exciting years with you!

And one special thanks also to Ville Valo, the guys from HIM and the Agents (and even although to Rauli Badding Somerjoki), because without them, I would have never find out, that deep inside me is hiding a Finnish soul and that my heart beats for Finland – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! And actually, it’s also great, that Ville Valo has returned to music business after the end of HIM! I am really curious about that, what we will hear from him in the future!

Back in time – Finnischer Metal, HIM und eine Teenischwärmerei für Ville Valo

Ebenso bekannt auch der Song legendäre Song „Funeral of Hearts“ oder „Gone with the sin“, übrigens zwei meiner Lieblingssongs!

*lach* Tja, in jungen Jahren macht man eben verrückte Dinge…

    Wunderbarer Artikel!
