Finnland ist nicht nur das Land des Tango und des Heavy Metal. Es gibt auch eine lebendige Bluesrock-Szene, die nur darauf wartet, entdeckt zu werden. Ein herausragendes Beispiel dafür ist die Band Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay. Im Interview spricht Gitarrist Sami Tammioja über die Band, ihre Musik und verrät, woher er und seine Bandkollegen die Inspiration für neue Songs bekommen.

Interview mit Sänger und Gitarrist Sami Tammioja von der Bluesrock-Band Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay

Moikka! Super, dass Du Dir Zeit für ein Interview mit meiner Finnland-Website nimmst. Erzähl doch mal: Wer seid ihr und was gefällt euch besonders an Bluesrock?

Sami Tammioja:
Gerne, wir sind Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay, eine Bluesrock-Band aus Finnland. Blues, aus dem sich dann später Bluesrock entwickelt hat, ist für uns eine der wichtigsten Grundlagen jeglicher Populärmusik. Sowohl Blues als auch Bluesrock sind Musikrichtungen, die wir alle schon oft gehört haben, genauso wie andere Musikstile. Ich würde sagen, dass alle unsere Bandmitglieder ihre eigenen Favoriten haben, doch wir teilen auch einige gemeinsame Einflüsse, wie ZZ Top oder Gary Moore.

Finntastic:
Ihr wart also zunächst als Trio unterwegs. Seit Herbst 2023 ist Katri als Leadsängerin mit dabei. Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt und wie hat sich eure Musik durch die neue Konstellation verändert?

Sami Tammioja:
Wir haben Katri (alias Donna Kay) über die Frau unseres Schlagzeugers kennengelernt. Sie hat Katri früher in der Schule Musikunterricht gegeben. Katri hat bereits mit vielen verschiedenen Bands gesungen und tritt seit Jahren live auf. Sie hat unserer Band eine enorme Stimmgewalt verliehen, da sie so gut wie jeden Song singen kann. Der größte Unterschied ist, dass wir uns nun keine Sorgen mehr machen müssen, ob jemand aus unserer Band einen Song singen kann – wir wissen, dass Katri es kann. Und ich, der früher in der Band gesungen hat, kann mich nun, da Katri den Gesang übernimmt, mehr auf mein Gitarrenspiel konzentrieren.

Finntastic:
Oft hört man, dass Finnland das Land des Tango oder des Metal ist. Für diese Musikrichtungen gibt es vor allem im Sommer zahlreiche Festivals. Wie beliebt ist dagegen Bluesrock in Finnland? Und gibt es bei euch auch Festivals, die den Schwerpunkt auf Bluesrock legen?

Sami Tammioja:
Ich glaube, Bluesrock ist heute genauso beliebt wie früher. Jedes Jahr finden in Finnland zahlreiche Bluesfestivals statt, von denen einige größer, andere kleiner sind. Dazu gehören Puistoblues, Rauma Blues, Ruska Blues, Tirmo Blues und Puutori Blues, um nur einige zu nennen. Es ist allerdings wahr, dass andere Musikgenres, insbesondere Metal, ältere Tanzmusik wie Tango und in jüngerer Zeit zeitgenössische Popmusik, hier in Finnland viel beliebter sind als Bluesrock. Aber Blues und Bluesrock scheinen hier in Finnland trotzdem ein stetiges, wenn auch kleines, treues Publikum zu haben. Ich denke, das ist weltweit so.

Finntastic:
Wie schwierig ist es, sich als Band im heutigen Musikbusiness zu behaupten? Welche Herausforderungen gab es bisher für euch?

Sami Tammioja:
Ich denke, die größte Herausforderung für Bands und Solokünstler besteht heute darin, bezahlte Auftritte zu bekommen und die eigene Musik auf Platten oder CDs zu verkaufen. Der Grund dafür ist, dass heutzutage so viel Musik kostenlos verfügbar und leicht zugänglich ist. Angesichts all der Streaming-Plattformen wie Spotify, Deezer oder YouTube könnte man meinen, dass es einfacher ist, Musik zu veröffentlichen und zu vermarkten. In gewisser Weise ist das auch so. Das Problem ist allerdings, die Leute dazu zu bringen, die Musik auch anzuhören – und vor allem, dafür zu bezahlen. Daher ist es ziemlich schwierig geworden, im Musikgeschäft erfolgreich zu sein oder gar seinen Lebensunterhalt nur mit Musik zu verdienen. Unsere Band ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür. Wir alle haben neben der Band noch andere Einkommensquellen.

Finntastic:
Ihr habt im Frühsommer 2025 euer Debütalbum „On another Level“ veröffentlicht. Wer schreibt bei euch die Lieder und worum geht es in euren Songs?

Sami Tammioja:
Bisher habe ich alle Songs für unsere Band komponiert. Ich schreibe die Musik und die Texte, und wir arrangieren die Songs dann gemeinsam. In unseren Songs geht es hauptsächlich um Geschichten aus dem Alltag mit all seinen Herausforderungen, Turbulenzen, aber auch gelegentlichen Triumphen.

Finntastic:
Haben die Songs „Blues Is The Mother“ und „Whiskey Woman“ eine besondere Bedeutung?

Sami Tammioja:
Ich denke, jeder Zuhörer sollte seine eigene Sichtweise auf unsere Songs – auch  auf diese beiden – finden. Natürlich habe ich normalerweise eine Vorstellung davon, was ich mit meinen Texten ausdrücken möchte, aber meine Interpretation des Songs ist nicht die einzig „richtige“, da jeder Zuhörer seine eigenen Erfahrungen und Gefühle mitbringt, wenn er den Song hört. Was man über diese beiden Songs allerdings sagen kann, ist, dass sie sowohl textlich als auch musikalisch tief in der Mythologie und Tradition des Blues verwurzelt sind.

Gibt es Musiker, die euch inspiriert haben? Oder gibt es vielleicht sogar Musiker aus der Bluesrock-Szene in Finnland oder anderswo, mit denen ihr gerne einmal gemeinsam auftreten würdet?

Sami Tammioja:
Wie bereits erwähnt, bringt jedes Bandmitglied ja seinen ganz eigenen musikalischen Einfluss in die Band ein. Aber natürlich lassen wir uns auch von anderen Musikrichtungen inspirieren. Oft gibt es dabei gemeinsame Favoriten. Dazu gehören Bands und Künstler wie ZZ Top, Gary Moore und Kenny Wayne Shepherd, oder auch the Hurriganes, Johnny Winter und Joe Bonamassa.

Wir haben bereits mit einigen finnischen Blues- oder Bluesrock-Bands auf der Bühne gestanden, darunter die lokale Bluesrock-Band Bluesnake oder die legendäre, finnische Rockband Peer Günt. Bei unserem Debütalbum haben wir außerdem mit dem ehemaligen Havana-Black-Sänger Hannu Leidén zusammengearbeitet. Er hat den Gesang produziert. Grundsätzlich würden wir uns aber freuen, mit fast jedem finnischen Künstler desselben Genres auf einer Bühne zu stehen, zum Beispiel mit Erja Lyytinen.

Finntastic:
Euer Debütalbum ist nicht nur als CD, sondern auch als Vinyl erhältlich. Vinyl ist in der Musikwelt seit einiger Zeit wieder sehr beliebt. War das der Grund, weshalb ihr euer Album auch als Vinyl veröffentlicht habt? Wie beliebt sind Vinyl-Platten denn überhaupt unter Musikfans in Finnland?

Sami Tammioja:
Die meisten Bandmitglieder sind in der Ära der Vinylplatten aufgewachsen. Deshalb wollten wir unser Album auch auf Vinyl veröffentlichen, obwohl das viel teurer ist, als nur eine CD herauszubringen. Am günstigsten wäre es natürlich, Musik nur in digitaler Form zu veröffentlichen. Wir fanden es jedoch schön, „echte“ Platten zu haben, die wir bei Konzerten verkaufen können.

Ich glaube auch, dass viele Leute, die unsere Art von Musik hören, immer noch gerne echte Platten kaufen und hören möchten. Ich selbst tue das zumindest. Was die Popularität von Vinylplatten in Finnland angeht, denke ich, dass diese Bewegung jetzt ihren Höhepunkt erreicht hat. Ich kenne persönlich viele Leute, die Vinyl kaufen, aber ich glaube nicht, dass ihre Zahl noch wesentlich steigen wird.

Finntastic:
Was macht euch mehr Spaß? Die Arbeit an einem Studioalbum oder das Spielen von Konzerten vor euren Fans?

Sami Tammioja:
Für uns als Band besteht die Hauptaufgabe darin, live zu spielen, also vor einem Publikum aufzutreten. Natürlich macht es auch Spaß, Platten aufzunehmen, aber live zu spielen ist der Grund, warum es unsere Band gibt.

Welcher gemeinsame Auftritt mit der Band ist euch bislang besonders in Erinnerung geblieben?

Sami Tammioja:
Wir hatten bereits viele schöne Auftritte mit der Band. Im letzten Jahr durften wir als Vorgruppe der legendären finnischen Rockband Peer Günt auftreten. Das war auf jeden Fall ein unvergessliches Erlebnis für uns!

Finntastic:
Habt ihr auch schon außerhalb Finnlands gespielt? Und wo kann man euch demnächst live erleben?

Sami Tammioja:
Bisher hatten wir noch nicht das Vergnügen, außerhalb Finnlands aufzutreten. Es wäre  natürlich toll, wenn sich bald die Gelegenheit dazu ergäbe. Für den Rest des Jahres haben wir aber bereits fast jeden Monat Auftritte, hauptsächlich im Süden Finnlands.

Finntastic:
Welche Pläne habt ihr für die Zukunft? Wird es bald ein weiteres Album geben?

Sami Tammioja:
Wir haben zwar bereits über das nächste Album gesprochen, aber ich denke, es wird noch eine Weile dauern, bis es finanziell machbar ist, da wir alle Kosten selbst tragen müssen. Wir würden aber auf jeden Fall gerne noch eins aufnehmen.

Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay ist eine Bluesrock-Band aus Finnland, die sich durch ihre energiegeladene Musik und ihre mitreißenden Live-Auftritte einen Namen gemacht hat. Die Band besteht aus den vier talentierten Musikern: Katri Heinonen (Gesang), auch bekannt als „Doña Kay“, Sami Tammioja (Gitarre), Jarno Mäkinen (Bass) und Pasi Oksanen (Schlagzeug).

Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay: Energetic blues rock from Finland

Finland is much more than just the land of tango and heavy metal. It also has a vibrant blues rock scene waiting to be discovered. A prime example is the band Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay. In this interview, guitarist Sami Tammioja talks about the band, their music and where they find inspiration for their songs.

Moikka, and thank you very much for taking the time to do an interview with my Finland website. Tell us more about your band! Why do you like especially blues rock?

Sami Tammioja:
With pleasure! We are Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay, a blues rock band from Finland. We believe that the blues is one of the main foundations of all popular music, and that blues rock is an extension of that. We have listened to a lot of blues and blues rock, as well as music from other genres. While we all have our own favourites, we do share some common influences, such as ZZ Top and Gary Moore.

Finntastic:
You started out as a blues rock trio. Katri joined you as the lead singer in autumn 2023. How did you get in touch with her? How has your music changed with the new line-up?

Sami Tammioja:
We actually learned about Katri, also known as Doña Kay, from our drummer’s wife, who used to teach her music at school. Katri then went on to sing with all kinds of bands and has been performing live for years. She has brought some serious vocal power to the band. She can sing just about anything! The main difference now is that we no longer have to worry about whether one of our band members can sing a particular song. We know that Katri can. And I, who sang in the band earlier, can now focus more on my guitar playing, since Katri handles the lead vocals.

Finntastic:
You often hear people say that Finland is the land of tango, or more recently, the land of metal. There are numerous festivals celebrating these genres in Finland, especially in the summer. But how popular is blues rock in Finland right now? Are there any blues rock festivals in Finland?

Sami Tammioja:
I think blues rock is as popular now as it has ever been. There are quite a few blues festivals in Finland every year. Some of them are bigger, some smaller: Examples for that are Puistoblues, Rauma Blues, Ruska Blues, Tirmo Blues and Puutori Blues, just to name a few. Having said, it is true that other genres of music, especially metal and older dance music like tango, and more recently contemporary pop music, are much more popular here than blues rock. However, blues and blues rock seem to have a steady, maybe somewhat small but dedicated audience here in Finland. But I think it’s the same everywhere.

Finntastic:
How difficult is it for a band to succeed in today’s music business, and what have been the main challenges for your band so far?

Sami Tammioja:
I think the main challenge for any band or performing artist today is getting paid gigs and selling their music, for example in the form of records, because so much music is readily and easily available for free. With all the streaming platforms out there, such as Spotify, Deezer and YouTube, you might think it would be easier to publish and promote music nowadays, and in a way, it is. However, the main problem lies in getting people to listen to the music, and more importantly, to pay for it. That’s why I believe that it can be quite challenging to achieve success or even to make a decent living in today’s music industry. Our band is a good example of this. We all have other sources of income besides the band.

Finntastic:
Your debut album, On Another Level, was released in early summer of 2025. Who writes your songs, and what are they about?

Sami Tammioja:
So far, I have written all of our original songs. I write the music and lyrics, and then our band arranges the songs together. The songs mainly tell stories about everyday life, with all its challenges and turbulences and, of course, triumphs too.

Finntastic:
Is there a special meaning behind the songs “Blues is The Mother” or “Whiskey Woman”?

Sami Tammioja:
I think every listener can interpret our songs, including those two, in their own way. Of course, I usually have a clear idea of what I want to express with my lyrics, but my interpretation isn’t necessarily the ”right” one since everyone brings their own past experiences and feelings to a song, while listening to it. One thing that can be said about those two songs in particular is that they are steeped in the mythology and tradition of the blues, both lyrically and musically.

Finntastic:
Which musicians have inspired your band? Are there any Finnish musicians or blues rock artists that you would like to perform with?

Sami Tammioja:
As I mentioned before, we all have our own individual influences and are inspired by many different kinds of music, but we do have some common favourites as well, including bands and artists such as ZZ Top, Gary Moore, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Hurriganes, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa.

We have already played on the same bill with several Finnish blues or blues rock bands, including the local blues rock band Bluesnake and the legendary Finnish rock band Peer Günt. We also collaborated with former Havana Black singer Hannu Leidén on our record. He produced the vocals. However, we would be happy to share a bill with almost any Finnish artist of the same genre, such as Erja Lyytinen.

Finntastic:
Your debut album is not only available on CD but also on vinyl. Vinyl has been popular among music fans for a long time. Is that why you released your album in both formats? How popular are vinyl records among music enthusiasts in Finland today?

Sami Tammioja:
Most of us in the band grew up in the era of vinyl records, that’s why we wanted to release our album on vinyl too, even though it’s much more expensive than releasing just a CD. Releasing music only in digital format would, of course, be the cheapest option, but we felt it would be nice to have ”real” records to sell at gigs.

I think many people who listen to our kind of music still prefer to buy and listen to physical records. I know I do. As for the popularity of the vinyl records in Finland, I think that movement has now reached its peak. I personally know many people who buy vinyl, but I don’t think this number will grow significantly.

Finntastic:
Which do you enjoy more: Working on a studio album, or performing live on stage in front of your fans?

Sami Tammioja:
For us, the main purpose of the band is to perform live on stage in front of an audience. Making records is fun,  but playing live is what the band is all about. 

Finntastic:
Which of your performances with the band has been the most memorable so far?

Sami Tammioja:
There have been many great gigs so far, but one of the most memorable ons, was when we opened for the legendary Finnish rock band Peer Günt, last year.

Finntastic:
Have you performed outside of Finland before? Where can we see you on stage in the near future?

Sami Tammioja:
We haven’t had the opportunity to play outside of Finland yet, but it’s definitely something we’re interested in doing. We have gigs lined up almost every month for the rest of the year, mainly in Southern Finland.

Finntastic:
What are your plans for the future? Are you planning to release another album soon?

Sami Tammioja:
We have actually already started discussing the next record, but I think it will be a while before it’s financially viable, since we pay for everything ourselves. However, we would definitely like to make another one.

Tres Pistoleros e Doña Kay is a blues rock band from Finland, who are renowned for their energetic music and live performances. The band consists of the four talented musicians: Katri Heinonen (vocals), also known as “Doña Kay,” Sami Tammioja (guitar), Jarno Mäkinen (bass), and Pasi Oksanen (drums).

In May 2025, the band released their debut album, On Another Level. Music and lyrics on the album are written by Sami Tammioja. The album was produced in collaboration with the two producers, Hannu Leidén (member of the metal band Havana Black) and Eero Kaukomies, both from Helsinki Rock Productions.
